Keyword (use "and, or, not")

The keyword search looks in many parts of catalog records, including (but not limited to) Author, Title, Subject Headings and Notes. Use the Boolean operators and, or, and not to combine search terms in a keyword search. Use quotation marks to indicate that terms should be searched as a phrase. Use parentheses to group search terms.

Use ? to truncate a search term. For example, a keyword search for “comput?” will retrieve compute, computer, computers and computing.

You may apply limits to Keyword searches.


Keyword Phrase

Title

Enter the title or first part of the title. Omit any initial article (A, An, The, Le, El, etc.) regardless of language.

Variations in spelling may affect your search. Try alternatives.

Title searches automatically truncate to the right. For example, a title search for “gone with the” retrieves all titles that start with those words: Gone with the Ivy, Gone with the Twilight, Gone with the Wind, etc.

You may apply limits to Title searches.


Journal Title

Enter the first part of the journal name. Omit any initial article (A, An, The, Le, El, etc.) regardless of language. The search is automatically limited to journals and series.

This search will not find individual titles within a series; to find these, use a Title search.

Journal Title searches automatically truncate to the right. For example, a journal title search for “journal of psychology” retrieves all journal titles that start with those words: Journal of Psychology, Journal of Psychology and Aging, Journal of Psychology and Judaism, etc.

You may apply limits to Journal Title searches.


Author

Enter the author's last name (family name) followed by part or all of the first name. You can also use the Author search to search for an organization as author; enter the first part of the organization's name.

You do not need to put a comma between an author's last name and first name. NUcat will understand the search both with and without the comma.

Author searches automatically truncate to the right. For example, an author search for “keller j ” retrieves all authors whose names start with that last name and first initial: Keller, Jack; Keller, James; Keller Jane; Keller Jane E.; etc.


Subject Heading

Use official Library of Congress Subject Headings, Medical Subject Headings, or Transportation Subject Headings searches. You may separate subject heading subdivisions with two dashes, but it is not necessary to do so. NUcat will understand the search both with and without the dashes:

United states history civil war
Renal dialysis
Railroads--Accidents

If you do not know the official subject heading for your topic try a Keyword search.

Subject Heading searches automatically truncate to the right. For example, a subject heading search for “zoning” retrieves all subject headings that begin with this word: Zoning, Zoning Alabama, Zoning Bibliography, Zoning Economic aspects United States, etc.


Call Number

Enter as much of the call number as you know. Include punctuation; however, spaces are ignored.

Call Number searches automatically truncate to the right. For example, an call number search “323.5” retrieves all call numbers that begin with these numbers: 323.5 B631c; 323.5 L523g; 323.50941 D262p, etc.


Author Title Heading

Use this search to find works by composers or prolific authors. The author title heading search offers easier browsing and more reliable results than a regular author search when searching for music.

Browse Author
