Guided Search
Keyword searches can find the terms you enter anywhere they appear in a record. With the Guided search, you can take advantage of drop-down lists to specify the relationships between or among keyword terms and to designate in what part of a record (for example: author, title, subject headings, or publisher name) you wish particular terms to appear.
To perform a Guided keyword search:
- Type in the search term(s) you want to find in the Search for field. Punctuation and case are ignored.
- Select "all of these," "any of these" or "as a phrase" from the first drop-down list.
- Choose "all of these" if you want all the terms you've typed in to appear, regardless of order (terms are automatically combined using the Boolean operator AND).
- Choose "any of these" when searching for synonyms. At least one, but not necessarily all, of the terms you have typed in will appear in the results (terms are automatically combined using the Boolean operator OR).
- Chose "as a phrase" when you want the terms to appear in the exact order that you have typed them. Call numbers and other standard numbers (e.g., ISBN, ISSN) must be searched as phrases. NOTE: You must select "as a phrase" if you are searching for a title that contains the words AND, OR or NOT. For example: man and superman; franny and zooey; all or nothing.
- Select the data fields in which you want your search terms to appear. The Search In drop-down list tells you what fields are available. Field choices include "any field," "subject," "title," "author," "publisher name," "ISBN," and so forth.
- If you would like to add more terms to your search, select the Boolean operator you want applied to the next search term(s). Boolean operators available are AND, OR, and NOT.
